The Tale
of the Cup
The story of The Left Coast Cup begins at
the Meadowlands, home of the New Jersey Devils Fan Club. A number of club
members proposed that a trophy should be contested by the three Metro New
York area NHL teams. It would be called the Metro Mug and would be awarded
annually to the winner of the three way series between the Devils',
Islanders, and Rangers. The team earning the most points during the regular
season would claim the award for it's own
fan/booster club. The idea was quickly approved by the other three clubs and
the special "Mug" was introduced during the 1990-91 season. Since
that time the Islanders Booster Club has won the award three times, the
Rangers and Devils once each.
Not long after the trophy was introduced,
Dave Levin, a member of the Los Angeles Kings Booster Club had a chance to
see the "Mug" on one of his many road trips to the Big Apple. He
loved the concept of the contest and suggested a California version be adopted. Upon
hearing of the idea, the Hammerhead Booster Club whole-heartedly agreed to
assume the organizational responsibilities of establishing the contest here
on the West Coast.
Soon proposals were sent to the Mighty
Ducks of Anaheim Booster Club and Los Angeles Kings Booster Club for their
approval. After getting a thumbs up from down south
an informal name contest was initiated. Numerous entries were included in the
name contest, including such gems as; The I-5 Cup, The Interstate
Invitational Series, The Gold Rust Cup, The Fault Line Trophy, The
After-Shock Award, The Goal Rush Grail, The Malice Chalice, The Un-Civil War
Memorial, The Left Coast Cup, and The Goalie Grail.
The Left Coast
Cup won the name contest, and competition began during the 1995-1996 season.
